About Me

Beth Lerew, Photographer and Editor

I am a semi-retired aviation dispatcher now working in aviation customer support with a passion for nature, wildlife, and photography (and, of course, my grandchildren). My enthusiasm for picture-taking and photography started at an early age when I learned to develop film in the basement of our church. I attribute my love and affinity for wildlife to my mother, though she was born and raised in Philadelphia she adores the mountains, wildflowers, and walks along the mountain streams. She instilled in me a great sense of belonging outdoors. She taught me to actually see, not just look. To give my Father equal credit he was forever taking my sister and I out fishing or on long rides through Pennsylvania’s scenic countryside. And to my husband Mark who had the good sense to move us hook, line, and sinker (so to speak) to the mountains of Pennsylvania. So after a lifetime of living in suburbia and only traveling to the mountains to hunt and fish here we were living the dream.

I was immediately drawn to the reclaimed strip mines and the abundant surprises that they held. They once were an environmental challenge for the communities, but these areas are slowly being rebuilt. Mining companies are planting eco-friendly shrubs, trees and grasses while local governments and sportsmen’s clubs are cleaning up the streams and, additionally, people are taking an avid interest in their habitat. Where there was nothing I have now spent thousands of hours out and about riding, walking, sitting, and observing the recovery of my little piece of paradise; taking pictures of the PA elk herd, the flowers and foliage, and all the other amazing wildlife that exists in the Quehanna Wild Area and The Pennsylvania Wilds.

In 2006 some friends and I put our photos together and presented a Central PA nature calendar to our friends and family; things have continued to grow from there. In 2008 I started to toy with the idea of selling photo gift items and framed photography. 2009 has been the best year ever as we rolled out Wild Eye in the Woods to subscribers. This interactive journal is a bi-monthly compilation of photos, stories, poetry, recipes and much more. Outdoorsmen, visitors, tourists, and local folks have all embraced our venture and are sending in their hunting and fishing stories, photos and all sorts of items for publication.

With 2010 here and time swiftly passing we have decided to open the other door to share our photography and stories on the internet. Enjoy!
